David Stone Martin
(American b. 1913)
David Stone Martin began his career as a graphic designer, worked as an
assistant in murals to Ben Shahn, and did mural design for Chicago's World Fair.
After working as an artist correspondent for Life Magazine during WWII, he
began illustrating for musical albums, mostly jazz. He illustrated covers for
over 400 records, for labels including Clef, Norgren, and Verve, and for such
performers as Charlie Parker, Billy Holiday, and Lester Young. His work has been
shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the
Art Institute of Chicago.
