Howard Russell Butler
(American 1856-1934)
After completing law school in 1882, Butler studied at the Art Students League and
at the Academie Colarossi in Paris. Primarily a landscape painter, he traveled and
painted extensively throughout the U.S., as well as painting at the artists’ colony
in Concarneau, Brittany. His exhibition history includes the Paris Salon, National
Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago,
Corcoran Gallery, Boston Art Club, and the Chicago, St. Louis, and Pan-Pacific
expositions; he frequently won prizes and medals at these venues.
